The days passed by and I kept thinking about Nick. On that following Saturday morning, the anxiety was building without any action to release the tension. Should I text him? Would that seem too needy? I desperately wanted to see him again, but I had to be careful when Jim was home. He wasn’t home often, but he also knew that I didn’t have that many friends, so if he saw me texting on my phone, he would become suspicious. I decided to just bite the bullet and send a quick text. “Good morning, Nick. How has your week been going?”
My phone sounded off the funny whistle notification. Oh no! Jim might be woken up. I hadn’t realized my phone’s sound was on. I quickly turned the phone to vibrate, hoping he hadn’t heard it, and proceeded to read the text from Nick.
It read, “Hey, beautiful. I miss you.”
My whole body felt a warming sensation as I read those words and my heart was melting. “I miss you, too,” I texted back.
The vibrate feature on my phone went off again and I looked down to see Nick’s answer to my question, “My week’s been going pretty good, but seeing you again would have made it that much better. How’s your week going?”
The thumping in my chest skipped a beat and I responded, “It’s going well, but I would like to see you again soon.”
Buzzing sounding again while my phone lit up with a preview of Nick’s next message, and it was a smiling face emoji. A wide smile emerged across my face at the thought of seeing Nick again. Only time would tell if our meeting was fated.
I heard noise coming from down the hallway, which meant Jim was starting to come to. Footsteps stomping down the hallway and his groaning with each step sent my body into a mini panic attack. The smile on my face disappeared moments before I saw Jim’s face. “Woman, where’s my coffee?!” Jim shouted. It was another ordinary day for me. I fumbled to get a mug for him and pour his coffee. When I reached into the fridge to get the milk, the smile formed again while out of Jim’s view. Those few texts from Nick would help me survive until we met again. Again… it had such a nice ring to it. I liked the calmness that rushed over my nerves as that word sunk into my brain and deep into my heart. Again. Again. Again.
